FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
Friends of the Library is a
volunteer group that offers support
at various levels. Funds raised
through used book sales at the
Antique Connection on the
Square and also through recycling
aluminum cans are given by the
Friends to the library for the
purchase of equipment,
materials and books.
VOLUNTEERS
The library is always in need of
volunteers in all departments. It
is a wonderful opportunity to
make new friends and also to
learn how the library functions.
REGULARLY SCHEDULED
MEETINGS
The Board of Directors meets on
the first Tuesday of each month at
5:30pm. The public is invited.
EXHIBITS
A large glass display case,
located in the lobby, is available
for use. Please contact the
director for availability.
TAX HELP AND IRS FORMS
Each year current IRS forms are
available for pick-up. Some forms
from previous years are also
available for copying. Additionally,
free e-filing help is offered to the
public at designated dates and
times during the tax season.

J.R. HUFFMAN
PUBLIC LIBRARY
The J.R. Huffman Public Library is
located in Hemphill, Sabine County,
Texas and opened its doors in 1994,
becoming a member of the Houston
Area Library System in September of
1995. The library began as a grass-
roots effort by local residents and was
started through the generosity of Al
and Pat Smith and the Temple
Foundation.
The Dr. W.T. Arnold , Sr. Theater, is
a wonderful addition to the library
facility and is dedicated and named
after long-time resident, Dr. William
Thomas Arnold, Sr., who was the town
physician for many years. Dr. Arnold
died in 1937, and a generous donation
from his children supplemented the
funding for the theater.
STAFF
The friendly staff of J.R. Huffman is
dedicated to meeting the educational
and informational needs of the
community and is always available to
answer questions.
LIBRARY CARD
J.R. Huffman Library will issue a
library card to any Sabine County resident
with a valid photo ID and additional proof
of residency. A replacement card can be
issued for $1.00.
COLLECTIONS
The library carries a large variety of
fiction books including popular novels,
paperbacks, westerns and mysteries
as well as non-fiction books on topics
ranging from A to Z. Large print books,
audio books, CDs and videos for both
children and adults, are also available.
Magazines and daily newspapers are
offered for in-house use
BORROWING & RETURNING
Books and audios may be checked out
for 14 days and videos for 5 days.
Patrons age 18 and over may check out
10 pieces of material, with a limit of 5
videos and 5 audios. Patrons under the
pieces of material. A family may only
check out a total of five videos and five
audios at one time. To avoid late fees,
checked-out materials may be renewed
by calling the library at 409-787-4829.
FINES & FEES
Library materials not renewed or
returned by or on the due day will incur a
late fee. The fee for books and audios is
$.20 per day per item, and the fee for
videos is $1.00 per day. The maximum
fine will be limited to $5.00 per item. If an
item is lost or damaged, the
replacement fee will be charged. If the
item is found and returned with the
receipt issued by the library, a refund will
be given.
REFERENCE
Some materials including reference
books, microfilm, magazines and
genealogy resources may not be
borrowed. Photocopies are available for
$.25 each.
RETURNING MATERIALS
Library materials may be returned either
in the library or in the book drop located
in the parking lot.
COMPUTER CARD CATALOG
A computer card catalog is available for
patrons. Information can be looked up
either by author, title, keyword or subject.
If the library does not carry a particular
item, it may be available through an
Inter-library Loan.
PROCTORING
Proctor services for exams are available
for a fee of $20. Please contact the
library director to set up an appointment
JUST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
J.R. Huffman Library has a charming
children’s area with easily identifiable
accelerated readers. This section includes
picture books for our youngest patrons and
juvenile fiction and non-fiction as well as
special selections for the teen reader.
Additionally, Summer Reading Program is
held for K-4 , and pre-K story time is held at
various times throughout the year.
RESOURCE & EQUIPMENT
Computer terminals with filters are available
with special permission forms required for
patrons under the age of 18. Computers can
be used free of charge on a first-come, first-
served basis with a time limit of one hour
when someone is waiting. No personal ad
sites, game playing or downloading allowed.
WiFi is available during library hours.
Additional library amenities are fax services,
typewriter, overhead projector, copier,
scanner, microfilm reader.
A PLACE TO MEET
Dr. W.T. Arnold, Sr. Theatre, which
accommodates 100, are available for
meetings. The conference room rental fee is
$25, and the theatre rental is $50. Please call

SUPPORT J.R. HUFFMAN PUBLIC LIBRARY
J.R. Huffman Public Library operates
primarily through donations supplemented
by funds from the city, county, state or
government. Cash contributions are always
welcomed. Additionally, book donations can
be made in honor or in memory of an
individual.
Used books, videos, audio books, DVDS and
magazines that are in good condition are
gladly accepted as donations.
